Mexican Independence Day

If you’re anything like us, you’re always looking for a reason to celebrate, and maybe enjoy some great Mexican food and cocktails with a few friends. Honestly, we can think of a reason to celebrate every day of the year, but there’s one day coming up that holds an extra special place in our hearts: Mexican Independence Day.

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated every year around the world on September 16. The holiday is not only a time to remember history, but also a time to celebrate Mexican culture with food, music, dance, and more.

There’s no way we’d let Mexican Independence Day pass without a celebration – which is why we invite you to plan your fiesta with Ori’Zaba’s Scratch Mexican Grill!

What is Mexican Independence Day?

Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain lasted for over 11 years, but September 16, 1810—when the fight commenced with the historic “El Grito!” battle cry—is when the world celebrates Mexican Independence Day. It was the first country in the Americas to declare independence from Spain which marked a turning point for Latin American history because it inspired many other countries to follow suit and break off ties with their European rulers as well.

Although this holiday is celebrated all over the world by Mexicans and people of Mexican descent alike, it does have an important place in U.S. history as well: Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexican Independence Day (though the two holidays are not connected), but it has recently gained popularity because Americans incorrectly celebrate it as a celebration of Mexican heritage rather than a commemoration of their own victory against France at The Battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo).

Celebrating Mexican Independence Day

There are many ways to celebrate Mexican Independence Day, but one of the most popular is to gather with family and friends for a feast of traditional food, drink, and music. The celebration can be as simple or elaborate as you like—the important thing is that you enjoy yourself!

  • Play Mexican music during dinner time! Try playing mariachi bands that play traditional tunes…it’s very festive! If you’re feeling extra, you can even dress in traditional Mexican clothing and truly transport your guests to Old World Mexico.
  • Fly the red, white, and green! Make sure your fiesta is filled with Mexican flags and festive decorations of green, white, and red. Hang your Mexican flag from your home and watch live broadcasts from Mexico to add spirit to the festivities.
